미래에는 로봇이 약사를 대신한다?

미국 NBC가 최근 방송한 '미래 로봇에게 뺏길 일자리 9개'(Nine jobs that humans may lose to robots)에 약사가 포함됐다.

NBC에 따르면 약사 외 변호사, 스포츠전문기자, 운전사, 우주비행사, 군인, 점원, 베이비시터, 재난구조원 등이 로봇에 위협받는 직종.

NBC는 최근 UCSF Medical Center 등 샌프란시스코 병원 두 곳에 로봇이 약을 조제하는 약국이 등장했다고 소개했다.

로봇은 전산망을 통해 처방전을 받아 약을 고르고 포장한다.

먼 나라 미국의 이야기이지만 미국의 약사나 한국의 약사들에게는 충격적인 소식이다.

로봇은 약사 입장에서 터미네이터인 셈이다. 지금도 약국에 설치돼 있는 자동조제포장기가 업그레이드되면 로봇이 될 수 있다는 이야기다.

처방전을 받아 조제를 하고 약값을 받은 후 별다른 복약지도 없이 약을 환자에게 건넨다면 로봇과 별반 다르지 않다. 아마 로봇은 최신 정보가 반영된 복약지도문이라도 출력을 해줄 것이다.

그렇다면 약사는? 아날로그형 약사들이 살아남을 수 있는 길은 무엇인가? 디지털과 자동화로 무장한 로봇의 침공을 막을 수 있을까?

아마도 단순한 약 조제 업무로는 로봇을 이길 수 없는 시대가 도래할지 모른다. 약사와 환자와의 관계, 로봇으로 대체할 수 없는 약사만의 역할이 무엇인지를 진지하게 생각해 봐야 한다.

로봇이 약사 역할을 대신한다면 로봇이 기자 역할을 할 날도 얼마 남지 않았을까? 우리의 터미네이터는 아주 가까이 와 있다.

Pharmacists

The next time you drop off a prescription order, you might see a robot behind the counter.

The UCSF Medical Center recently launched an automated, robotics

-controlled pharmacy at two UCSF hospitals.

Once computers at the new pharmacy electronically receive medication orders from UCSF physicians and pharmacists, the robotics pick, package, and dispense individual doses of pills.

Machines assemble doses onto a thin plastic ring that contains all the medications for a patient for a 12

-hour period, which is bar

-coded.

The pharmacy system, which was phased in over the past year, so far has prepared 350,000 doses of medication without error.

This fall, nurses at UCSF Medical Center will begin to use barcode readers to scan the medication at patients’ bedsides, verifying it is the correct dosage for the patient.

The automated system also compounds sterile preparations of chemotherapy and non

-chemotherapy doses and fills IV syringes or bags with the medications.
